Professional Standards

Upholding Excellence: SDAR’s Professional Standards Program

At the San Diego Association of REALTORS® (SDAR), we are committed to maintaining the highest level of professionalism across our industry. That commitment is upheld through our Professional Standards Program, which provides a fair, respectful, and transparent process for resolving disputes and addressing ethical concerns among REALTORS®.

This isn’t just about compliance—it’s about preserving the integrity of our profession, protecting consumers, and ensuring a level playing field for every member.

What Are Professional Standards?

Professional Standards are the systems and procedures in place to enforce the REALTOR® Code of Ethics and provide dispute resolution services among members. These standards are set by the National Association of REALTORS® and administered locally by SDAR.

Key components of the program include:

  • Ethics Complaints – Filed when a REALTOR® is believed to have violated the Code of Ethics.

  • Arbitration Requests – Filed to resolve commission or business disputes between REALTORS®.

  • Ombudsman Services – A free, informal way to resolve misunderstandings before they escalate.

When to Use Professional Standards Services

You can leverage SDAR’s Professional Standards if you:

  • Believe a fellow REALTOR® has breached ethical responsibilities

  • Need to resolve a commission dispute between brokers or agents

  • Want guidance from an experienced ombudsman to clarify expectations

  • Are seeking a confidential, peer-reviewed process for resolving real estate conflicts

All cases are handled by trained REALTOR® volunteers through our Grievance Committee and Professional Standards Committee, with full support from SDAR staff.

How It Works

  1. File a Complaint or Request Arbitration
Submit your issue in writing along with supporting documentation.

  2. Initial Review by the Grievance Committee
The committee determines whether the complaint should move forward.

  3. Hearing Process
If the matter qualifies, a panel from the Professional Standards Committee conducts a formal hearing in accordance with NAR guidelines.

  4. Resolution Issued
The panel renders a decision, which may include sanctions, education, or awards, depending on the case.

Why Professional Standards Matter

  • Protects Consumers – Ethical conduct builds trust with the public and promotes the REALTOR® brand.

  • Supports Accountability – REALTORS® are held to a standard higher than the law alone.

  • Preserves Professional Integrity – Ensures that business practices are conducted fairly and transparently.

  • Resolves Issues Efficiently – Most matters are resolved at the local level, avoiding costly legal action.

Ethics. Integrity. Accountability. The REALTOR® Way.
