At the Greater San Diego Association of REALTORS® (SDAR), advocacy is at the core of our mission to protect private property rights and promote fair and equitable access to the American Dream of homeownership. Through active engagement in legislative processes, local policy discussions, and public education, SDAR is committed to ensuring that housing remains attainable, property ownership is respected, and REALTORS® can continue serving their clients in a fair and thriving marketplace.
Below are a few examples of how SDAR has taken action to defend homeowner rights, support renters and property owners, and remove barriers to achieving the American Dream.
SDAR has consistently opposed rent control and overly restrictive eviction policies that discourage property investment and reduce rental housing supply. By engaging in local hearings and submitting public comments, SDAR ensures that policies remain balanced, protecting tenants while preserving landlords’ rights and encouraging continued housing development.
Through its Government Affairs team, SDAR has supported pro-housing initiatives that promote infill development, streamline permitting processes, and upzone parcels to allow for more housing units. These efforts combat the housing shortage and help keep home prices within reach for working families.
SDAR has actively opposed "split roll" property tax proposals, such as Proposition 15, that would reassess commercial properties annually. These taxes would increase costs for small businesses and renters, ultimately putting upward pressure on housing costs. SDAR's advocacy preserved Proposition 13 protections, helping ensure housing and business stability.
SDAR has partnered with local agencies to inform REALTORS® and homeowners about changing federal and state requirements related to lead-based paint in older homes. These efforts help keep buyers informed while pushing back against costly, overreaching mandates that could impact the affordability and salability of older housing stock.
SDAR has advocated for fair short-term rental regulations that preserve homeowners' rights to rent their properties while maintaining neighborhood quality of life. By lobbying against overly restrictive bans, SDAR supports property owner flexibility and supplemental income opportunities that can make homeownership more financially sustainable.
