At the San Diego Association of REALTORS® (SDAR), professionalism isn't just a goal—it’s a standard. That standard is upheld by the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, a commitment every SDAR member makes to conduct business with honesty, integrity, and fairness.
For over a century, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Code of Ethics has served as the cornerstone of REALTOR® professionalism. It sets REALTORS® apart from non-member licensees by holding them to a higher level of conduct in their dealings with clients, the public, and one another.
The REALTOR® Code of Ethics is more than a set of guidelines—it's a pledge to protect the public, advocate for clients, and elevate the real estate profession. Divided into three key sections, the Code governs how REALTORS®:
Serve Clients and Customers (Articles 1–9)
Always act in the best interest of clients, maintain confidentiality, and promote honest dealings in every transaction.
Treat the Public with Integrity (Articles 10–14)
Uphold fair housing laws, avoid misrepresentation, and commit to ongoing professionalism and transparency.
Work with Fellow REALTORS® Respectfully (Articles 15–17)
Promote cooperation, avoid disparaging other professionals, and resolve disputes through arbitration—not litigation.
Builds Consumer Trust – Clients know they’re working with professionals who value honesty and accountability.
Protects the Industry – Upholding the Code safeguards the reputation and future of the real estate profession.
Promotes Fairness and Respect – Members are expected to engage with one another constructively, even in competition.
Ensures Accountability – SDAR’s Grievance and Professional Standards Committees investigate complaints and uphold the Code through peer-reviewed ethics hearings.
At SDAR, we take ethics seriously. As a local association of NAR, we are responsible for:
Educating members about the Code of Ethics through regular training and continuing education.
Reviewing and investigating alleged violations through the Grievance Committee.
Conducting fair and impartial hearings via the Professional Standards Committee.
Offering mediation and arbitration services to resolve disputes professionally.
The National Association of REALTORS®(N.A.R.) requires all REALTORS® to complete Code of Ethics training every three years. SDAR provides free and low-cost options to help members stay in compliance while reinforcing their professional values.
Next Cycle Deadline: December 31, 2025. Check Your Training Status in the SDAR member portal.
Being a REALTOR® means more than holding a license. It means living up to a code that puts clients first, values fairness, and respects your peers.
