San Diego Sets Moratorium on Evictions through May 31

On Wednesday, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to put a temporary moratorium on evictions of residents and small businesses that cannot make rent payments during the coronavirus pandemic. The law temporarily halts evictions in San Diego until May 31. Tenants must demonstrate a “substantial decrease in income or medical expenses” caused by COVID-19 in order to qualify. However, it will not relieve a tenant of their requirement to pay rent or restrict a landlord from recovering rent at a future time. (Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to the same effect on Friday.)
