Governor Newsom and San Diego Halt Evictions

Along with the Governor’s mandate, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously in favor to put a temporary moratorium on evictions of residents, and small businesses that are not able to make rent payments during the coronavirus pandemic. The law temporarily halts evictions in San Diego until May 31. Tenants must be able to demonstrate a “substantial decrease in income or medical expenses” caused by COVID-19 in order to qualify. However, this does not relieve a tenant of their requirement to pay rent or restrict a landlord from recovering rent at a later time.
